Horse trailers; they’re part of owning a horse, right? Like your truck, horse trailers are exposed to elements and will rust and corrode. People often think that because they don’t use their horse trailer much, corrosion shouldn’t be much of a problem. Not true. We pretty much understand how winter salt can be damaging to a trailer, plus there are other factors that can be as damaging. Horse trailers do need rust protection!
1. It’s common for horse manure and related liquids to be inside a horse trailer. Both by-products have corrosive qualities that will cause rust and corrosion to form on steel and aluminum. Unfortunately, rinsing with a garden hose doesn’t always get rid of all of the corrosive by-products; it starts creeping in where you can’t see it until it’s too late.
2. Traveling with a horse trailer isn’t always a seasonal thing. Some trailers are parked once the show season is over, yet others are used in the winter to travel to indoor events or to the beach for a nice ride. Winter travel means salt. In either case, when you park the trailer outside in the elements, it’s usually on bare ground and the trailer’s frame and decking is continually exposed to moisture. The result is additional corrosion even if the trailer’s frame is made of aluminum.
3. Horse trailers are usually aluminum bodies and steel frames. When you mix steel and aluminum, by nature, they will corrode. Add moisture, horse waste and a wood floor and you’ll have enough galvanic action occurring to destroy the most expensive horse trailer.
The NHOU product we use can put a stop to rust and corrosion. NHOU is the most environmentally friendly biodegradable rust prevention product on the market.
NHOU is made from food grade mineral oil; it’s so gentle that it will not hurt human eye tissue. Ingesting enough NHOU may cause the same digestive discomfort as mineral oil.
If for some reason your horse should decide he or she liked mineral oil they would have to crawl under the trailer or lift the floor mats and do a lot of licking.
NHOU does not harm paint or vinyl. It will not damage standard wiring or computer wiring and connectors found on modern vehicles.
If you want to save your money for tack and entry fees, let us treat your horse trailer or any vehicle with NHOU.
Prior to bringing your trailer in for rust protection, please:
Remove all flooring mats
This allows for treatment of inside metal to wood or metal to metal body to floor seams.
Unlock all doors and gates
This allows for treatment of hinges, latch assemblies & related linkage.
Trailer underside We’ll handle the underside of the trailer, removing any mud or road build-up that would interfere with application.
Treatment of wood decking
Factory sealed wood decking
When treating your trailer we apply our protectant to the underside metal and decking. If the decking has a factory applied sealant such as polyurethane or marine grade epoxy coating, NHOU will not bond to the sealed surface. This becomes visually apparent a short time after application. NHOU will bond to the metal, bolts, washers and untreated wood next to the sealed product.
Wood decking without sealant
NHOU bonds very well to decking without factory sealant including pressure treated wood. It displaces water and bonds to the wood extending the serviceable life of your trailer’s decking. Note; mineral oil is used to preserve wooden butcher blocks, salad bowls and utensils.
Top deck treatment
Part of treating your trailer includes the inside body deck to metal contact points, which is pretty much the inside perimeter and any metal bracket/supports that are bolted to the deck. If you wish to have the top/inside trailer deck treated we can do that too! You need to allow for additional time. The process requires additional applications with a set time and a rub down of the deck after.
5th wheel & Gooseneck trailers
If your trailer is a 5th wheel or gooseneck , you’ll need to leave the truck with the trailer. We have ample parking and experienced CDL-A drivers. Treatment time requires 2 to 3 hours depending on trailer size.
Mineral oil fact
Veterinary uses: Over-the-counter, veterinarian use mineral oil is intended as a mild laxative for pets and livestock. Certain mineral oils are used in livestock vaccines, as an adjuvant to stimulate a cell-mediated immune response to the vaccinating agent. In the poultry industry, plain mineral oil can also be swabbed onto the feet of chickens infected with scaly mites on the shank, toes, and webs. Mineral oil suffocates these tiny parasites. In beekeeping, food grade mineral oil-saturated paper napkins placed in hives are used as a treatment for tracheal and other mites. It is also used along with a cotton swab to remove un-shed skin on reptiles such as lizards and snakes.
Mineral oil is used in a variety of industrial/mechanical capacities as a non-conductive coolant or thermal fluid in electric components as it does not conduct electricity and functions to displace air and water.
Food preparation: Because of its properties that prevent water absorption, combined with its lack of flavor and odor, food grade mineral oil is a popular preservative for wooden cutting boards, salad bowls and utensils. Rubbing a small amount of mineral oil into a wooden kitchen item, periodically, will impede absorption of food liquids, and thereby food odors, and ease cleaning. By impeding water absorption, wetting and drying cycles, which can cause cracks or splits in wood, are reduced although some of the mineral oil is picked up by the food and ingested.
